‘Even though I have been in the choral music business for over forty-five years, I still look forward to the month of December with all the concerts and wonderful music that’s written for the season of Christmas. Although the carols come in a tapestry of forms and emotions from down the ages, the underpinning elements of the season remain constant – nostalgia, memories of childhood and past gatherings with family and friends, recollections of good (and sometimes sad) times, but above all a deep sense of goodwill towards all.’

The Christmas carol has its origins in the Middle Ages but it has since embraced a wide variety of musical backgrounds. In this album, religious sentiment is set in many different contexts – from the mystery plays to an African American spiritual, from its origins in Gregorian Chant and 16th-century secular dance to traditional examples rooted in poetry. Some of the most famous and beautiful examples are heard alongside energising contemporary carols to present a tapestry of the genre across the centuries.
